From Table 3, it can be seen that 74% of the top 100 (the world’s top universities), 68% of the top 200 and 64% of the top 300 (the high level and famous universities) are from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, or Canada. There is a large gap between China Mainland and some developed countries, i.e., USA, UK, and Japan on the scores of each indicator. Peking University is the only one Chinese Mainland university among the top 100. There are 4 China Mainland universities in top 200, which are Peking University (100), Tsinghua University (109) and Zhejiang University (110) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (158). 7 China Mainland universities rank among the top 300. 28 China Mainland universities are ranked among the top 600. Most universities of China rank after 1000th. In terms of the overall scientific research strength, China is around or below average level in the world (Qiu, J., Yang, R., et al.,2009).

(3) Quantity and quality of papers need improvement in China
China Mainland universities have published a great quantity of papers. The score of papers of China Mainland ranks 5th, the score of highly cited papers ranks 8th, and the score of hot papers ranks 9th in the ESI rankings. But the score of ratio of highly cited papers ranks 44th. The low ratio of highly cited papers of China Mainland universities reveals their comparatively poor influence of academic products over the world. Besides, the quality of papers also needs to be improved.
(4) Great gap on research innovation between China and the top countries in the world
Only 11% of all granted patents are invention-type patents for China universities. But the proportion of invention-type patents in other top countries (or regions) is close to 90% (State Intellectual Property Office, 2010). As can be seen from Table 2, China’s patent applications rank 3rd in the world but the quantity of it is only one-third of the United States. China ranks at 9th on the score of hot papers. There are only a few innovation results in China. It requires long-term efforts to reach the goal of innovative universities (Qiu, J., Yang, R., et al., 2009).
(5) Disciplines of universities in China need to be highly strengthened
The number of universities with disciplines included in the ESI ranking rises continuously from 2007. Table 4 shows part of the Disciplines Competitiveness Ranking of World-class Universities and Institutions.China Mainland universities are still weak on the discipline construction. On some disciplines, there is none China Mainland university or research institutionhas been among the ESI rankings, i.e. Economics & Business, Immunology and Psychiatry/Psychology. It reveals poor strength of China Mainland universities and research institutions on these disciplines. Though there are quite a few of disciplines of China Mainland universities are among the ESI rankings, the rankings are still lean. Chinese Academy of Sciences has much stronger research strength than any other China Mainland universities and research institutions. It has a total of 19 disciplines among the ESI rankings, 2 of which reached the top 10 disciplines.
